While the rest of Honeybear Nation was boarding flights for spring break, the Harpeth Hall mock trial Green team was battling it out at the Davidson County Courthouse for the State Mock Trial Competition. Harpeth Hall has sent many teams to the state competition in past years; however, this team was unique in that it was made up overwhelmingly of freshmen–novices to mock trial.

After coming in a close second to Montgomery Bell Academy in the district competition, the Green Team was determined to make waves at state. The team immediately went back to work, scheduling long practices and several scrimmages before the competition in order to be fully prepared. They overwhelmingly succeeded as they became the highest placing Harpeth Hall team in history.

The competition consisted of five trials. Harpeth Hall swept their first four, landing them a spot in the State Championship round. They were set to compete against MBA, the same pairing from the District championship round just a few weeks prior. Aside from having three seniors to Harpeth Hall’s zero, Montgomery Bell Academy’s team was the returning state champion and placed highly at the national competition last year. Nevertheless, Harpeth Hall appeared confident, calm, and collected, knowing that their many hours of preparation were dedicated to this moment. While they did not win the championship, they still made school history and ended their season on a high note. Lia Hayduk, junior on Harpeth Hall’s Silver Team, reflects on watching them at the competition: “Seeing these underclassmen, first-year Mockies become passionate about the world of mock trial made me so joyful. I am beyond proud of the hard work and dedication that they put in this season to achieve the outcome that they deserved. Sitting in that courtroom, you could not tell in the slightest that these girls were only 14 and 15.”

The mock trial program at Harpeth Hall will lose five seniors next year; however, the program will continue to thrive with the dedication and determination that these underclassmen showed throughout their season. After all, they are the most successful mock trial team in Harpeth Hall history.

For more information on the mock trial program, email current mock trial president, Justine Sitton, or up-coming co-presidents, Lia Hayduk and Maggie Tattersfield. Tryouts for the team will be early in the fall semester of the 2017-18 school year.
