Senior Josephine Fentriss is often recognized for her lovely bright red hair and the healthy hipster snacks she brings to school that everyone envies, but what many do not know about Josephine is that she plays the harp.

When I found out that she plays the harp, I thought it was worth writing about because you do not meet many seventeen-year-olds who play one of the oldest instruments in the world. I asked Josephine how she decided she wanted to play the harp instead of the piano or violin, and she said, “I saw it at the children’s museum in Minneapolis, and it looked so cool.” Josephine then told me, “I started on a lever harp, so changing the levers from neutral to sharp was hard.”A lever harp is a much smaller version of the pedal harp in the photo to the left.

Nine years later, and she has become a very talented harpist. I  listened to Josephine play, and it is amazing how calming the music can be. She told me that her favorite thing about playing the harp is that “once you learn a piece, playing it is relaxing. It’s nice to be able to create something (music) that can be listened to and enjoyed by others.”

Josephine hopes to continue playing because “it’s been part of my life for so long.” This spring, Josephine will perform in her first recital. Josephine has never performed in a recital before because she enjoyed practicing and honing her skills as a harpist in a low-pressure setting. Although Josephine does not know the details of her recital she told me that all are welcome! LogosNow will announce the details of Josephine’s recital once they are available.
