Long Live the Bucket List – Faculty Bucket Lists

Now that the first month of 2018 has come and gone,, we are all thinking of the goals we did or didn’t accomplish. No, you didn’t give up soda, but you did run a marathon. Your New Year’s Resolutions may be forming in your mind despite the fact that you may have also already forgotten them, but I think that’s not necessarily a bad thing. As we all know, good things come to those who wait. In support of this belief, I decided it would be more appropriate to share some items on our faculty’s long term goals lists, otherwise known as “Bucket Lists.”

Dr. Fulwider

  1. Go to Japan
  2. Climb Mt. Pisgah in North Carolina
  3. Take my kids to California before it’s destroyed

Ms. Gonzalez

  1. Walk El Camino de Santiago in Spain
  2. Drive across the western part of the US
  3. Learn to play the guitar and play in a band

Dr. Jacobs

  1. Spend two weeks away from all my tech and not feel weird about it
  2. Go on a “walking holiday” in Scotland or Iceland
  3. See the freshwater seals in Lake Baikal, Russia

Mrs. Mantle

  1. Visit Ireland and walk along the Cliffs of Moher
  2. Read a book from every country
  3. Hike the Appalachian Trail

Mrs. Rogers

  1. Hike the El Camino – Ms. Gonzalez, we should go together!
  2. Go back to Paris, but this time with my husband
  3. Bike across southern France

Dr. Schott

  1. Go to Olympic National Park
  2. Travel to New Zealand
  3. Hike a good portion of the Appalachian Trail

Ms. Stockdale

  1. Kayak in Friday Harbor and see the orcas migrate
  2. Hike the Pacific Crest Trail
  3. Go to the Vatican for Conclave and see the black and white smoke when a new pope is selected

Coach Sutton

  1. Go to Southern Australia where my husband is from
  2. Photograph wildlife in Africa (especially cheetahs)
  3. Spend a month or longer not working and enacting the “no plan plan”

Mr. Wang

  1. Convince my wife to let me go skydiving
  2. Take an ocean to ocean road trip across every continent
  3. Cook the best steak

Dr. Wilsman

  1. I want to take my two boys, Charlie and Elliott, to a hockey game at every NHL arena in North America. They love hockey like I do and I think it would be an incredible bonding experience.
  2. I would love to go back to college and get a degree in every academic department. For me, college represented some of the best years of my life and not for the reasons that most people would list (I didn’t attend any frat parties…). Learning from people who are truly experts in their field, learning new things about the world every day and having that be your job: you can’t beat it!
  3. The biggest thing is just to help to raise well-adjusted, compassionate young adults, both my own children and my students. If I can do that for another twenty or thirty years, that’s all I really need to consider my life a success.
